University Office Technologies Moves to New Office, Re-Brands To UTEC!

On October 1, 2008, University Office Technologies (now known and branded as UTEC), was purchased by local businessman Kevin Van Kannel. At the time, UTEC was in the business of selling typewriters, copiers and fax machines.

So much has changed over the past eight years.

The company has added 30+ employees and recently moved to their new offices and headquarters at 1995 Highland Drive (Suite C) in Ann Arbor just off of Varsity Drive east of State St.

Owner and President Van Kannel has spent the past year seeking a new home where he and his staff can continue to serve their many customers across the six-county southeast Michigan market of Washtenaw, Livingston, Wayne, Monroe, Oakland and Macomb County.

"It was important to us to stay in the Ann Arbor/Washtenaw County area since this has been the roots of our company" stated Van Kannel, "but as our company has grown and expanded, we wanted to make sure we were easily accessible to all of southeast Michigan."

The new office is a very modern 29,000 square foot building. Van Kannel’s vision was to have "a state of the art facility providing a showroom and conference center meeting room. We wanted to be able to professionally serve our customers and enable our customers to use our facilities for any offsite meetings or conferences they may need. By welcoming and encouraging our customers to use our facilities, it provides them a chance to use and implement technology in a way they might not have in the past while demonstrating that we are a different type of partner."

Sales Director Dan Heimler enthusiastically echoes Van Kannel. "Our new facility is a quantum leap for UTEC! The newly renovated 1500 square foot showroom will showcase the latest printing and scanning technologies from Sharp along with software packages that improve business processes. Clients can come to the showroom and see exactly how the systems and software work together to increase office productivity. Ann Arbor is known for high tech and UTEC has been the heart of high tech for businesses since 1975. The moment you walk in the new office, you will know you have the right technology partner for your business."

A key-supporting component of the UTEC business comes from the service support team led by Director Tom Wykowski. "The increased additional warehouse/service space allows engineers more efficiency to refurbish and prep new equipment easily having all materials, equipment, accessories and supplies organized and readily available. The technical staff will now hold training in a classroom type environment while showcasing the newest technology available to ensure our customers continue to get the service they have come to expect."

UTEC has consistently supported non-profits in all the communities that they serve. "Our mission is to be a great connector of our customer base to many of our deserving non-profit partners." With this in mind, UTEC has contributed equipment, cash and time resources to many charities and non-profits across the markets they serve. "If there is a need for a non-profit support from one of our employees, then it is important for our company."

Over the past eight years, UTEC has developed relations to a diverse customer base including The Ann Arbor Marriott, Holiday Inn near The University of Michigan, Corrigan Oil in Livingston County, A123 Manufacturing in Livonia, The City of Royal Oak, Huron Valley Schools and many more small, medium and large companies.

Van Kannel states "Our mission has been to establish lasting and meaningful relationships with our customers and offer a win-win value proposition for both of us. Our company has had to change and adapt to be a leader in recommending technology solutions. We want to be a trusted partner."
